STANLEY CLARKE ON SERENDIPITY'I'm just realizing all the great things that have happened because people didn't show up for a gig.' In an interview with Financial Times, four-time Grammy winner and bass virtuoso Stanley Clarke muses on the role of chance occurences. He formed his '70s fusion band Return to Forever with Chick Correa after Correa filled in for a pianist who didn't show for a gig Clarke was playing. And he is currently playing in a very successful duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi; they used to be a trio before the drummer couldn't make a gig. Clarke also plays with a young drummer he stumbled across on You Tube. Much of Clarke's time is now devoted to scoring films and TV shows, which he loves. “Music smooths things out,” he says. “It’s miraculous.
